Percussionist and occasional actor Nicholas Freilich writes and performs under the moniker Epicte. Freilich DJed his way through law school (often at Washington, DC’s Reef) - releasing this album in the process. Three words best describe his self-titled debut album: sweeping downtempo ambience. While Freilich’s beats are mostly straightforward, it is Epicte’s melodic breadth provides the main reason for repeat listens.

Epicte’s eponymous debut begins with the atmospheric, breathy yet synth-heavy “X-Ray Rendenmein.” The album then switches into a moody vibe with “Vase Lines” and “Carpe Momentum.” Following this minor descent is “Johnny, the Cliché-Busting Robot,” a standout track among standout tracks. It sounds like what Birdy Nam Nam would do if they used keyboards instead of turntables.

“Another Drama” should be used as a lesson plan for electronic musicians looking to occupy the entire sonic spectrum. It’s full of high end, low end, and everything in between.

This album is back-loaded with great tunes: “Celtic Glass Glitch” is a fantastic dance track; “Bus Tribute” and “Deep Ocean” make for sweet mellow breaks in any mix tapes you make this summer.

All in all, Epicte’s debut is a solid listen from to start to finish and a recommended listen.
