This is what happens when you slack off. Rather: this is what happens when you slack off in spite of having a deep-seated sense of Catholic guilt and a latently Puritanical work ethic. Seemingly contradictory religious descriptors aside, welcome, readers, to the second in an ostensibly three-part series wherein I go toe to toe with a forbiddingly large (and seemingly ever-growing) pile of yet-to-b ... Your favorite NBA team will probably not win a championship this year. In fact, unless your team is in a major market or has deep pockets, it's unlikely your team will win a championship in the foreseeable future. This is more than just mere probability. In the NBA, the rich and great stay rich and great at the expense of everyone else. Over the past 25 years, only seven different teams have won a ... Continue Reading

With tips of the hat to Beatbots’ own Miriam DesHarnais, John Darnielle’s “Last Plane to Jakarta” (by extension, Roctober magazine), and the short-form crit of Robert Christgau, I thought it high time to carve through the ever-growing pile of albums that has been accumulating on and around my desk(top) since, oh, the spring of last year. Blow off the dust, give ‘em a spin, see what I’ve been missi ... Continue Reading

Happy summer, y'all. Here's some of the stuff on my library card. As always, I represent only myself, not my employer. If you're tight on cash (or even if you're not) remember the library. Free is nice. The Eternal smile: Three Stories by Derek Kirk Kim and Gene Luen Yang Since I liked American Born Chinese and Same Difference and Other Stories (by these authors respectively) I was psyched ... I returned to Whartscape 2009 after a shift as a popcorn shill, in step with the happy thump of Lord Scrummage. Six hours had passed and approximately fourteen acts had already performed on Day Three. Yes, I had missed AK Slaughter and The Crazy Dreams Band and Zomes, but there were still things to look forward to. After my brief, initially anxious encounter with the festival yesterday, I was dete ... Continue Reading

The bad news? I missed the first eight hours of the second day of Whartscape 2009. The good news? There were eight more hours to go. Fourteen hours may seem like an impossible amount of time to deal with as a concert-goer or a concert-organizer, but here we are now, two days almost in the can, and everything moves forward. I readily admit I am an incomplete witness to this event, despite my ... Continue Reading

Whartscape 2009 began serenely. The usual problems that a mid-Atlantic July would afford a mid-day outdoor event in terms of heat scorch and skin fry were kept in check by a cooling breeze, occasional cloud cover, and spring-like conditions. Since this first part of the festival, held outside of the Baltimore Museum of Art, was open and free to all, busloads of schoolchildren in transit mixed i ... Continue Reading

Hi and welcome to the second installment of On My Library Card. I'm a librarian and these are a few of the items I have checked out. Not only is this update overdue, my books are as well! That may have been a lame joke, but it is also true. Librarians have overdues too. Isn't that comforting? Below you shall find a hipster anthology, an elephant, a pig, a polygamist soap opera, a Southern humor ... Continue Reading

AK Slaughter is a rap duo from Baltimore comprised of Aran Keating and Emily Slaughter. Over the course of the past few years, they have been getting heads to nod both locally and nationally with their energizing blend of ribald party rhymes, cogent lyrics, and whip-smart beats. Their live show is a guaranteed good time (listen to a recent set here courtesy of the Beatbots A/V Club). Their next ... Continue Reading
