Good question.  Huh

The 'zine kinda went toe up years ago, and has been on life support ever since. Tim Kabara and I are the only two staffers loading content on the front end; it's been that way for the past three years or so (seriously; just check the archives), and new content has been getting scarcer and scarcer every month. There hasn't been any recruitment push beyond that, let alone any "surviving" admins to set the new blood up in any case. Aside from some talk of a relaunch way back when, Jux seems to have lost interest and gone all absentee clockmaker, pretty much just letting things wind down on their own. So it goes.

As for the boards, I really don't know. Maybe the regulars discovered a new online hangout and neglected to mention it. That, or Facebook really is that much larger of a timesuck than we all thought...

Either way, yours is the first new topic I've seen on the boards in a long damn time. Total ghost town, man.

geez, thats rough..i think that facebook has a real big part to play in this too, as i've seen a lot of forums i frequent suffer as a result of more and more ppl going to fb. maybe it was a really marked timeframe where a ton of people started using it before they made the timeline and all that stock crap..

certainly does seem like a lot of people find it easier to post there and get their word out and under those circumstances, i can understand a lot of ppl shying away from forums. it seems like i have had this discussion several times recently on forums though. i wish there were a way we could bring things back here but of course that means we'd need to reach out to people, bring em back in. maybe the spam scared people off, who knows. i always liked this forum and thought it was really chill. if theres anything we can do here by all means let me know, i'd be down to try and help.

Exactly. A lot of the original 'Bots staff and forum contributors were IRL friends and associates, too, so I imagine that, aside from continental drift and burned bridges, the slow-but-steady integration of F'book (and Twitter, and even Instagram) into their day-to-day gave them another outlet by which to touch base with one another, and to share erstwhile forum-friendly blurbs with a wider audience of non-'Bots folk, minus the obnoxious trolls and SPAM-slingers. Can't say as I blame 'em for that...

As for the fate of the site in general, there was a brief Clubhouse convo circa summer of last year, wherein Jux had talked about setting up another (initially invite-only) forum and likewise archiving the 'zine, though the (admittedly minimal) response from the staff was to keep on trucking as-is.

That, and the long-considered prospect of a total site overhaul—a thankless labour of love for Jux if ever there was one—would maybe daunting to the point of not being worth the effort. Can't say I blame Jux for shying away from that Herculean task; I recently archived all my 'Bots ish to a WordPress blog, and DAMN but that took a long-ass time.

A-and, here we are. Maybe we could resuscitate the forums via (or, as as an offshoot of) the Beatbots Fan Page? Raise the flag, see who responds, etc.?

Such a negative Nikolai, you are.  Wink

I've got two more reviews coming down the pipeline, hopefully have 'em posted by late August or early September (gotta wait for the one to arrive in the post).

Don't you die on me, Beatbots!
