Not only did Wye Oak come dressed to kill, but their set was, as always, a killer! They’re playing a cd release show for their new album “Knot” at the Ottobar on July 21. A full set this time. I can’t wait.

Hopefully video of this performance will surface. The best stage exit I’ve seen yet saw the Lexie Mountain Boys scurrying across Art Museum Drive, cladly clothed, and into the trees. You might not get what they’re doing (I was kind of lost at this performance), but The Lexie Mountain Boys are always entertaining.

The photos below (thanks ~J Metro!) don’t quite show the complete story, but at least you won’t be flying totally blind while listening to the audio.

While there are plenty of shows this weekend as Whartscape gets underway, with countless bands from Baltimore and points beyond, I can see how both this show at the Baltimore Museum of Art’s front steps and Small Sur in particular might be overlooked. But if you missed this show, that’s your loss.

Excellent start to Whartscape 2009! While I’m disappointed that I missed Black Vatican’s set (there were two stages at this show and I chose the other), I was rewarded with a new, first-time played song from the fantabulous Wye Oak. I also caught Lonnie Walker (NC), another weird yet awesome Lexie Mountain Boys performance, and a solo set from Jana Hunter.

I had really been looking forward to catching Small Sur, my first time in seven months, and they certainly rewarded my anticipation. I got to hear my favorite tune (Two Mantras), which oddly seems to get left off the setlist more often than not.

Look for these sets to follow: Lonnie Walker, Lexie Mountain Boys (audio only, though video is really the only way to go with these ladies) and Wye Oak. The Jana Hunter set may not circulate due to the fact that the heat outside overheated my recorder and it shut down towards the end of her set.

Also look for more Whartscape sets as I’m planning on taping a few bands at today’s (Saturday) outside show on North Ave (Human Host, Pleasant Livers, Vincent Black Shadow, Sick Weapons, and Team Robespierre), as well as Sunday’s outdoor show (Degenerettes, AK Slaughter, Despot or Zomes, Crazy Dreams Band, Future Islands or Teeth Mountain, Double Dagger, and Dan Deacon).

A quick one song set from the “Paused in Time” dvd release show on Sonar’s Club stage on July 2, 2009. I’m not sure if the show officially began with this Profitne$$ set, as there were several people who performed a cypher to begin the night. Unfortunately, I didn’t tape that part of the show.

Profitne$$ was definitely the highlight of the evening for me and I was bummed he was limited to just one song. Hopefully he’ll play more shows. Following Profitne$$ was Eze Jackson (of the band Soul Cannon), which was followed by a two song jaunt of Jamma Wun with Eze. I enjoyed both. The Get’ Em Mami’s played next. Excellent set, though not much different from the last time I’d seen them in May.

The Get ‘Em Mami’s set from this show can be found here. While I wanted to tape Ty Gudda’s set, I decided to call it a night after The Get ‘Em Mami’s set.

The Eze Jackson and Jamma Wun set will be posted next.

The Water
Local Baltimore favorites “The Water” play at the Rufustival, June 6, 2009. For the whole set go here.

Wye Oak
Wye Oak (Jenn Wasner and Andy Stack) play a couple of great tunes on a nice day for nice people. “Take It In” off their soon-to-be-released July 21st sophomore album “The Knot” is followed by “Family Glue”, the classic off of “If Children”.
